-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A VSS error has occurred when backing up Exchange 2003/2007 Databases. Check the VSS writer status.

Open a command prompt on the Exchange server
enter the following command: VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS

If the Last Error states:
- Retryable Error- Reboot the server and then retry the backup operation. Rebooting often resolves VSS Application Writer failure. After rebooting, check VSS writer status again.

- Non-Retryable Error- review the Event Viewer Application Log for information regarding the cause and possible solution to this issue.

IF VSS Writer Status returns:
State: [1] Stable
Last error: No error

Writer Status is stable and you should not receive this error again.

As a LAST resort, reapply the latest Microsoft Service Pack to Windows 2003:
